Once upon a time in Ethiopia king Lalibela embarked upon building a holy place in the Ethiopian highlands. In a remarkable rural setting you can bear witness to his "new Jerusalem". To be protected from raiders the rocky outcrop was picked.
It is now a UNESCO world heritage site. The churches have solidity dug into the rocky surroundings and are linked by trenches carved out revealing caves with the skeletons of monks past their best before date.

The best way to get there is by flying with Ethiopian Airlines Addis Ababa to Lalibela, driving takes a full day and you need a sturdy 4x4. Visiting during the rainy season July to Sept is not always possible as the roads get impassable and flights can be cancelled.
