Great Mosque, Mali Every spring, streets of Djenne sing to the sounds Mali music and chanting. Suddenly the moonlit night is pierced by three sharp blows of a whistle, then on the fourth blow hundreds of people cheer and the annual mud festival is underway! Djenne is most famous for its Great Mosque - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest mud building that can host up to three thousand devotees. Each year the community take part in a messy festival of fun to help re-plaster and repair their much-loved Great Mosque. Djenne is also the oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa. This important trading post was founded in the 9th century and flourished principally due to its ideal location on the river within reach of Timbuktu. Today you can still be part of this trading tradition at the must-see colourful Monday market.
