Trajinera boats - Katryna Swartwout Even in the mad metropolis of Mexico City you can find that special place where life slows to drifting pace. Express reader Aida Kidd travels out of town to enjoy a relaxing morning in Mexico... "Xochimilco is a network of narrow canals located 18 km (11 miles) southwest of the gigantic metropolis. After a few days of close encounter with the bustling city, we escape to its quieter backyard. Xochimilco in fact means 'floating garden' in native language, and it deserves every sense of this befitting name. We rent a colourfully decorated gondola and the beauty of this ancient waterway unravelled in front of our eyes like a Monet canvas. Early spring green reflecting in the emerald water, water lilies floating on the edge of the canal, while willows sway by the shallow bank. The morning sun gently breaks through the mounting clouds as the canal comes to life with gondolas carrying musical bands and food hawkers. Soon the aroma of menudo soup, tortilla bread and corn sweets permeates the air. The singing and laughter start too, as many local families come out to celebrate birthdays and reunions. We lie at the front of the gondola floating down a magical river embodied with incredible sights, sounds, smells and sensations."
