Learn to scuba dive on the world’s second largest barrier reef, experience Mexico and help towards the long term conservation of the Mayan Riviera. GVI’s longest running marine conservation expedition in Mexico involves exciting marine research projects combined with local community interaction and breathtaking scenery in the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve. The remote expedition base at Pez Maya is set in the jungle with views of the Caribbean sea and is ideal for expedition members with no previous scuba diving experience.
Activities include coral reef and fish monitoring, turtle nesting and crocodile surveys, community education and sustainable development of local tourism. Comprehensive dive and science training is included with an option to become qualified up to PADI Dive Master. This expedition is run in conjunction with CONANP, the government’s National Commission for the Protection of Natural Protected Areas, local NGO ASK and the local state university of Quintana Roo. Expedition members are needed for 5, 10 and 15 weeks. Expedition members have the opportunity to apply for a free internship.
