You may want a holiday yet not want to be waited on hand and foot. There are obvious restrictions in staying in a hotel; the times of meals alone. Those restrictions need to be balanced against the flexibility that self catering accommodation offers. Mum deserves some time out of the kitchen
The compensation for having to do a little work around the place is the stunning surroundings. Few locations in the UK, and certainly few in England, match the Cumbrian Lakes. They are every bit as rich as those in continental Europe and beyond.
The decision to spend your annual holiday in Cottages Lake District may be one of the best you have ever made. Once you have enjoyed the region for the first time you are likely to mark it down for a return visit. The fact that there are so many stunning locations merely adds to the attraction of being able to explore the whole region over time.
Lakes and Fells
The biggest problem is choice. The most famous lakes such as Windermere or Ullswater are obvious places to consider first time around. There are modern facilities available on these lakes but they are sympathetic to the requirements of National Park status. There are no noisy activities and speed limits are scrupulously enforced.
It is a pleasure to cruise the length of one of these large lakes but it is equally delightful to enjoy the quieter stretches of the shoreline. The beauty of these areas has been an inspiration to many, poets, writers and artists.
While the whole area is known for its lakes, it also attracts walkers of all abilities. There are those that prefer a gentle stroll whilst enjoying the fresh air, and the far more energetic that seek the challenge of the huge number of Fells. There are even some who enjoy the sport of Fell running; up and down a Fell as nimble as a goat seeking new shoots.
Areas such as the Lakes are initially attractive because of their natural beauty. They attract visitors for other reasons also. That can be history that develops in such a rich area, a history born of man’s wish to live in such surroundings.
Tourist facilities
The modern tourist facilities have developed to cater for visitors. These include cafes and restaurants, public houses and handicraft shops. While the summer is the height of the season with peak numbers, there is still some demand in the other seasons. The Lakes is an area close to large population centres that are able to take advantage of mild weather even in winter to drive up for a break.
It provides a sharp contrast from city life. It is an area of country lanes; certainly not dual carriageways once you get into the region proper, so it is important to relax and absorb your surroundings. You may not be able to move too quickly on some of the busy roads but if you have selected a cottage, you have flexibility. You don’t need to arrive anywhere by a deadline. Deadlines are what you face each day at work. This is your holiday.
