It is exasperating seeing the footage. Now the crews are on the ground the scale of the destruction is widespread. We can see it. Last year I was in Ko Phi Phi and it was strange to think of the tsunami being right there. Buildings still kind of went up haphazardly IMO. Still in Japan now they will be rebuilding and need all the aid they can get. The bodies are being removed with the rubble and there follows the same risks we had with The last Tsunami and Haiti disasters that of contaminated water.

I even saw in some video a house being swept into a house and you kind of think that will stop the first house but now we see the waves power as the second house just gets put on the pile of flotsam.

If this were not enough is the reality now of the nuclear fallout. They downplayed the damage and like my friend says they should have dumped concrete onto it to douse the thing and soak up at least stop it penetrating the atmosphere. This was what they did in Chernobyl. As close as this is to Tokyo they all must be pretty frightened and under siege.

I liked my time in Buenos Aires and the backpackers simply cant get enough of the european feeling party scene down there while the rest of the world is away :)

The city has some amazingly wide boulevards and the longest street in the world.
But for me the highlight of Buenos Aires is the food. Gorgeous massive red steak is not the only luxury you can afford here but the wines are great too. Down with the malbec (disfuta) and another bottle por favor.

I particularly liked my stay in San Telmo district. The hostels are very good all over and if your coming from Brazil it can feel a little safer and for some this is a big reason they prefer this South American Country than anywhere else.
Not to mention the plethora of places to visit and things to do you could spend a year here.

8) Guatemala. Forget the capital of the same name get to Quetzaltenango Huehuetenango Cobán Antigua Guatemala Panajachel Flores and Tikal. It’s a colourful country full of culture just visit the local markets the locals walk miles to bring hamakas (hammocks) too and woollen handbags. Make sure to visit some ruins Tikal the most famous of all. Its buzzing with backpackers because life here for the backpacker is perhaps as cheap as anywhere. Then there is the old colonial city of Antigua my mate Billy runs one of the best bars in the world there so go say hello ! It’s Monolocos – awesome food and party in this pristine colonial city. Many come here to study Spanish in the numerous schools and it works !

There was minimal damage to US interests by the Tsunami. No loss of life and time to prepare. Well the tsunami has now cleared and we can examine the aftermath in Japan and the closest point to the eppicentre Sendai. Trucks and cars just deposited among the bits and pieces of well buildings and signs and trees.

The big worry as if this were not enough is the explosion seen and recorded at Fukushima and now the reality emerges that a radiation leek has occurred.

You can do the twitter search here http://twitter.com/#!/search/Fukushima

But thank goodness the tsunami didn't destroy other areas so badly.

I can see this is a cost that is now just going to increase as well. As if we don't spend enough on the passports themselves.

I think a really small charge is leveraged from many countries when you leave and its usually cash ! This I find a bit dubious and perhaps would prefer to pay a more admin savvy tax that I know is going into the country to make it better.

But I haven't tried to enter my own country as johhny foreigner and wonder how that would actually go.

Bearing witness to the nature of some selfish skiers or boarders time and time again doesn't suprise me. It is saddening to hear that this has happened to infants. And perhaps will make them feel like never revisiting the slopes again. If anyone sees this happen and can catch the offending skiers then it is your duty to nail them up. I would string them up myself but then the pc world of today would have me strung up for my strong views. Still you won't catch me mowing anyone down and you might find the world returning to a more civilized society as I might shoot people for taking other peoples lives in their own hands (here speedbumps don't slow down offending motorists and anyone would be killed).

Interestingly when I get into boarding and am again a debutant on the slopes then I get someone who thinks they can ski cutting me up purposefully and I cry after them 'If only I had a pair of skis on'...

I think helmets can give people a false sense of security. It reminds me of one of my other peeves, people wearing flip flops in the swimming pool, protecting themselves and dirtying the pool floor for the rest of us.

I am a member of the Belize Wildlife Conservation Network and run a humane education programme in Belize. I was both disappointed and appalled by the use of a tied Green Iguana on the front of the Honduras & Bay Islands edition. Not only is this company profiting from and promoting illegal activity in Honduras by using this photograph but this has a knock on effect on conservation work being done in other Central American countries. I can only assume that this was a huge editorial boo boo and that someone will be held responsible for making this terrible and clearly badly researched error. I hope they choose to do the responsible thing and make a sizeable donation to Green Iguana conservation efforts in Honduras while recalling this book.

The fact of the matter is that we all know that is not the case. And further when I contacted them, stating that I am a member of the IUCN Iguana Specialists Group, concerning this issue my concerns were dismissed. Clearly they do not care about what they did.

I took the advice of a friend and tried to post this to their facebook page but somehow the posts disappear immediately. Hmmmm...

The fact is that wild creatures in tropical countries are widely exploited (although there is some legal farming of iguanas as "chicken of the forest"). And travel authors have an obligation and responsibility to highlight this issue. In any case, I agree that the author and publishers messed up choosing this image for the photo. The publishers are always looking for the photo that stands out on the bookshelf in the store. To choose an image that shows a tied up animal shows poor judgment and lack of taste at the very least. In the three issues of my own book the cover has always depicted a wild animal taken in its natural habitat. Why Lonely Planet couldn't have done similar I don't know. But to look at the other side, they could argue that they're trying to show the plight of Honduran wildlife. But that would be post-hoc disingenuousness.

This is no fun. I am reluctant to even bother checking flights with these cheap carriers these days. BA sometimes have good deals, less often also virgin but you can fly to nicer locations and for me the cheap airlines have stifled the market they captured so easily. Their long term game was of course to up their prices and have their brand in place, but they are in my eyes causing its destruction. And it is far from a brand that we trust.
