Frequently Asked Questions

When hundreds of people get off a plane it causes big queues. Get met by name at the airport and avoid the queues.

The security allowed by the Viator system we employ allows you to cancel your booking up to 24 hours before your transfer is due.

The best time to visit the Bahamas is from mid-December to mid-April, which is the peak season with the best weather (sunny, dry, and less humid). The shoulder seasons, from late April to June, offer a good balance of nice weather and fewer crowds. The low season from July to November coincides with hurricane season, offering the lowest prices but with a higher risk of rain and storms.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. US, Canadian, UK, and EU citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days (for the US) or 3 months (for Canada/UK/EU). A valid passport, proof of onward or return ticket, and evidence of funds are required. Always check with the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the most current entry requirements.

The official currency is the Bahamian Dollar (BSD), which is pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar (USD). US dollars are accepted everywhere, and you will often receive a mix of both currencies as change. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas and resorts. ATMs are available, especially in Nassau and Freeport.

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is the main gateway. The primary option is a licensed taxi, which has regulated rates to key areas like Downtown, Cable Beach, and Paradise Island (confirm the fare before you leave). Many hotels and resorts offer pre-booked shuttle services. Ride-sharing services are not as established as in other countries.

To travel between islands ('island hopping'), you'll use domestic flights (Bahamasair, Western Air) or ferries (Bahamas Ferries). Within an island like New Providence (Nassau), taxis are common, and local 'jitney' buses are a very cheap way to get around the main routes. For smaller 'Out Islands', renting a golf cart is a popular and practical option.

The main tourist areas and resorts are generally safe. However, like any destination, it's important to use common sense. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in Nassau (particularly 'Over-the-Hill' areas away from tourist zones). Avoid leaving valuables unattended on beaches, don't display flashy jewelry, and use licensed taxis.

Budget travelers: $75-150 per day (staying in guesthouses, using jitneys, eating at local spots). Mid-range travelers: $200-400 per day (staying in standard hotels, using taxis, mix of restaurants). Luxury travelers: $500+ per day. The Bahamas can be expensive, especially in resorts on Paradise Island and in the Out Islands.

Attractions vary by island. In Nassau/Paradise Island: Queen's Staircase, John Watling's Distillery, the Straw Market, and the Atlantis resort. In the Exumas: Swimming with the pigs at Big Major Cay. In Harbour Island: the famous Pink Sands Beach. In Eleuthera: the Glass Window Bridge. Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island is a must for divers.

Tipping is customary. Many restaurants and hotels automatically add a 15% gratuity to the bill, so always check your receipt first. If no service charge is included, a 15-20% tip is standard for good service. Tip taxi drivers 15%, and hotel porters $1-2 per bag.

Pack lightweight clothing: swimwear, shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen. A light sweater or jacket is useful for cooler evenings or air-conditioned restaurants. Water shoes are great for rocky beaches, and insect repellent is essential, especially in the evenings.
