You will hike around 8km in this trip and visit Lake Ashi, the Hachiri heritage path, Yamanaka Castle Ruins, Genbe River. The transportation between the sites is either on foot or by local bus. The guide will give you background of this historical part of Japan. You will traverse the Hakone Mountain like Edo period travellers and see Mt Fuji from different angles while you walk if weather permits. Hakone Hachiri is a Japan Heritage where you can experience how people traveled during Edo period (17th century). It is a part of the Old Tokaido Highway including the steep slope of Hakone mountains. Our Hakone Hachiri tour starts from Hakone Yumoto. We hike and take the bus to visit Amasake Tea House and walk on the cobble stone path to Lake Ashi where we will see the lake, Mt Fuji and the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine. After lunch near the Hakone Checkpoint, we take a bus to skip the temporally closed part and then resume the walk towards Mishima. Mishima Station is our ending point.

This tour involves 4-5 hour hiking in Hakone (about 8-9km) and you need to be fit to complete it. You will traverse the outer rim of Hakone caldera and enjoy lunch and onsen in this experience. The 90-min ascent up to the mountain top has an elevation gain of 500 meter. Then the 2.5 hour ridge walk gives you a panoramic view of Hakone area (. As you walk through the bamboo field, you will hear the birds singing and see sakura in spring, red leaves in autumn and step on the powdered snow in deep winter. After the ridge walk, you will go down the mountain in 30 minutes and reach Sengokuhara. Then lunch at local Japanese restaurant. Onsen follows for relaxation. If the weather is good, you can see Mt Fuji most of the time while you are on the ridge walk. Even when Mt Fuji is hiding behind the clouds, you still have a view of Miyagino and Sengokuhara in this traverse mountain hike. We go by chartered taxi to the trailhead. You will hike 2-3 hours along the old Tokaido highway some on cobbled paths and some on forest trails between Hakone Yumoto and Lake Ashi. Some part of this path is off-the-beaten track and we normally have the forest for ourselves. This part of the Hachiri has the best preserved cobbled path and more primitive forests. You will hike past the wood crafting village of Hakone - Hatajuku and we skip the steepest part of the trail by bus and reach a teahouse that has a history of 400 years. After an energising amasake, we will continue our hike to Lake Ashi where if you are lucky, you can have a picture with Mt Fuji and the lake view. The Hakone checkpoint is our last stop where you will understand the significance of Hakone in the history of Japan. At the end of the tour, you can then catch a bus or a ferry (pirate ship) to your next destination at around 1pm.

The tour I‘m offering is basically for nature-loving guests. The guests will walk around relatively flat areas as opposed to hiking steep mountains, so the guests can spend more time in appreciating the nature of Hakone with a certified professional nature guide. The nature in Hakone is very unique in its creatures and geological aspects. The guests will meet wild plants of the season some of which are endemic only this part of Japan and the world. Also, the guests will spot resident and migratory wild birds, insects, local fish, and if lucky mammals such as weasels, deer, foxes, raccoon dogs, and so on. During the tour, the guests are suggested to use binoculars that the guide will bring for each guest during the tour as it is very handy to spot creatures and see far-off landscapes for the unique geological features of Hakone. The tour will stimulate your sense of wonder as the nature in Hakone is much different from whererver you come from. Let's enjoy the nature in Hakone together!

I have another forest bathing tour which have been popular over the past few years. It is relaxing and entertaining, involving some walking exercise. At the same time, I was also feeling an increasing demand for forest bathing which focuses more on the senses and requires less walking. After researching several different locations in the Hakone area, I found this forest which is ideal for the new yet authentic Shinrin-Yoku experience. In this activity, no need to walk up or down. The site is mostly flat so that anyone can join without much worry. In between your busy sightseeing days, you can stop by the lakeshore in Hakone to refresh your body and soul.
