It is a rare opportunity to participate in an animal conservation project in Africa. But as with much in life, opportunities revolve around who you know rather than what you know. The person I know in this instance is Shivani Bhalla, or Shiv to her friends. I met her at an Internet Cafe in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India in November 2004. Despite being unable to correctly guess her accent as Kenyan, I was correctly able to ascertain that she has one of the most enviable jobs in the world. Working in animal conversation is a dream job for many, but after meeting Shiv, I discovered that this is no easy profession.

You are standing on concrete Chowk Rd, one of the main arteries bringing vehicles, autorickshaws, pedal rickshaws, and animals into the city running parallel to the west bank of the river. Like much of India, the sounds are deafening and the unsettled dirt and exhaust forms an almost tangible fog around you. The road sits a kilometer or two inland, and the only way from here to the river is through a network of narrow alleyways called galis. Take the left, step into your first gali and only the animals can follow you.

The galis may be too narrow for the other vehicles but the chaos doesn’t cease. The small walls of buildings, temples, storefronts seem acoustically ideal to enhance the cacophony of sounds swirling around you. The cows groaning and mooing seem five times louder, and you can barely hear yourself think over the constant beeping of motorcyclists forcing their way through the 6 foot wide walkway. Call to prayers from the mosques and clanking and bells from the Hindu temples mix with chanting of the hundreds of holy men baba in the city and beats from the tabla. Read more>>>

They say Greenwich Village has been lost to students and tourists, but look closer. There is still a wonderful afternoon to be found for the working man and his son in the very centre of the Village, in and around Eighth Street. No girls allowed — except for the cool ones.

The Hidden Valley City - La Paz

It was only 3 hours by bus from Oruru to La Paz. Nothing prepares you for the surprise once you drop from the Altiplato down into a valley which is La Paz, 1.5 million clinging onto the sides of the canyon. 20mins down into the heart of the city we took a taxi to an area called Rosaria where our hostel the Cruz de la Andes was. Our room had a fantastic mural but the showers and room were very cold, otherwise a really good place. First stop, the Witches Market to buy some warm Alpaca jerseys.
When we were there it was cool with thundery showers, which ran off the streets into goodness knows where. Two days after we left there was a landslide and others were drowned locally. The problem is that with such a large catchment area in the valley and houses perched on every available space it makes for a bad situation when ther is alot of water around. But I still got burnt when the sun was out,the altitude! We never saw so many Bolivian pigeons than in the Plaza. One of the best places to get a good view of La Paz is Parque Laikakota as well as the San Fransican Cathedral.

SHUFFLING from one bare foot to the other, I wriggled into my swimsuit, ready to plunge into the pool at a remote, off-the-grid bathhouse. Outside, steam wafted from the surface, and bathers squealed with delight as they eased into a pool fed by a 112-degree natural spring coming off the rocks of a limestone cliff. The day — with uninterrupted blue sky and abundant sunshine beaming down on us — was unseasonably warm: It was 20 degrees.

THE ROAD TO PAMUKKALE: A bus journey through southern Turkey...

The muezzin’s call to morning prayer was still floating across the streets of Kemer as my fiancee and I arrived at the meeting place. It was 5am, but already a dozen or so fellow tourists were waiting by the fountain in the town's main square, for the bus that would take us 250 kilometres north-west to Pamukkale, the ancient thermal springs in the west of Turkey.

Like 90% of visitors to southern Turkey’s Antalya province we were all Russian-speakers. We had chosen this day to take an excursion inland - peeling our bodies from Kemer's warm pebble beach, forsaking lunchtime plates of kebap at its outdoor cafés, and saving the hammocks in Paradise Tea Garden for another time.

ON the first night, I cracked the bedside window an inch, and awoke, who knows when, with snowflakes on my face. By morning it had snowed a foot, and we climbed from the frozen lake near our lodge, breaking trail through deep snow and thick firs, and skied the chutes between cliff bands. The powder exploded, cold puffs in our faces. It was more like falling in slow motion than what I think of as skiing.
While we ate lunch in the meadow, our friends accidentally released an avalanche over the cliffs. It was just a small one, really, no larger than an elephant. It thumped down on the hillside, gathering mass as it sloughed our way.

“It’s not coming this far,” Shelly said.

“It’s going to stop,” said Lena.

“Maybe we should move out of the way,” I said. “Just in case.”

Still the snow rumbled gently toward us.

“Good idea.”

We hoisted our packs and shuffled on skis into the trees, just as the pet avalanche inched to a stop 200 feet above us.

“Want to ski it again?” said Shelly.

“Of course.”

BUMPING along a freshly plowed road in Lake Tahoe, Calif., I felt oddly unburdened. No skis were locked on top of my car, no clunky boots rattled in the trunk. After more than a decade of ski trips to the region, I kept feeling as if I were missing something. Sure, it was sunny, but also a biting 17 degrees — and I was going kayaking.

Originally when we were first planning our New Zealand itinerary, we were a little clueless about the roads here. One tramping guidebook we were using had the Welcome Flat trail from the West Coast on one page and the Mueller Hut trail from Mt Cook on the very next page of the same section. So, logically we decided that these two trips could be done back-to-back. Silly us, the two areas are on opposite sides of the divide, and the shortest drive from Fox Glacier to Mt Cook is 6-8 hours... We're so glad that we had the time to make the drive (split it up with a night in Haast) and also spent enough time in the area to wait out the weather.

FOR over half a century, Angelinos have flocked to this secluded corner of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s easy to see why. Despite the 8,000-foot altitude, Mammoth Lakes’ sprawl of splashy condos and strip malls has a distinct Los Angeles feel. But the surrounding frozen lakes and granite peaks, immortalized by the photographer Ansel Adams, are decidedly un-Los Angeles, and can hold their own with any landscape in Colorado or Canada. And with expanded daily flights from the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles, not to mention a flurry of new après-ski offerings, Mammoth is hoping to draw skiers from beyond the Golden State.

Friday

4 p.m.
1) SIBERIAN SPA

Imagine a vast white expanse of what looks like frozen Siberian tundra, dotted with natural hot springs and surrounded by soaring peaks. Hilltop Hot Spring is popular with locals, but you can join in, too. There are no formal signs or footpaths — just follow the S.U.V.’s past the airport five minutes east of Mammoth Lakes and enjoy a steaming soak, free of charge. For more privacy, cross the road to Wild Willy’s, a more secluded spring, which requires a 20-minute trek and a pair of snowshoes. read more>>>

Sounds Amazing

A boat trip on one of the sounds was high on our list of things we wanted to do on this trip. We'd been asking around as to whether we should go out on Milford or Doubtful Sound. Most people said either would be good, but the overall impression we got was that Doubtful was better. It was certainly more expensive, but we treated ourselves – went totally for broke! - and booked an overnight cruise with Fiordland Expeditions.

Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland NP (Dusky Sound is the largest). It is three times longer than Milford Sound and has a sea surface area of roughly 10 times that of Milford Sound. It has three arms – Hall, Crooked and First, and all three are on the southern side of the fiord. Two other sounds, Thompson and Bradshaw Sounds, connect to the north.

Doubtful Sound has one of only two marine reserves in Fiordland (all the land in Fiordland NP is protected, but not the water, apart from these two reserves, we think this is wrong and that everywhere within the park boundaries should be protected – or that the park boundaries should include the fiords). The marine reserve here covers the narrow passage called Te Awaatu Channel between Bauza and Secretary Islands. The water is relatively shallow, 30m in places. Doubtful Sound reaches 430m at its deepest and there are sills near the entrance that are around 90m. The waters are subject to tides but with only a moderate range, between 2.5 – 3m. The water isn't that warm (hence we didn't swim!), averaging 11C. It can reach a slightly warmer 15C in shallower water and during warm weather, but the deeper parts maintain 11-12C.  Read more>>>

This is our last entry for Laos...we have made it to the sleepy capital of Vientiane. From Vang Vieng we took a 3 hours bus to Vientiane, not much to write about the ride, pretty uneventful experience. Vientiane is 8km away from downtown. This time I was not going to let the touts harassed us. We simply walk 300 meters away from the bus station, in the middle of the countryside, to find a tuk-tuk to bring us to town for the right price.

Took us few attempts to find a decent place where to stay. Same thing as always...price may be cheap, the problem is to find a decent and clean place. Our night in Vientiane would be an early night. Nothing really that we missed. Here bars and restaurants have to close by 11.30pm, and your hotel is locked from midnight on. You always have enough sleeping hours in sleepy Vientiane!

The $100 Paris Weekend

ONE Friday night last month, I stood watching a North African band called Daxar perform at the Satellit Café world music club in Paris and was considering having a beer. By the time the band had finished its Magrebian take on the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (“Do you know this one?” the band leader asked coyly. “It’s not ours.”), I had decided against it. Such luxury could cost me the Louvre on Sunday, or wine with lunch Saturday.

I was trying to make it on $100 over a weekend in Paris, and that meant forgoing the beer — and the Louvre and wine with lunch as well, it turns out. But who needs beer when you’ve got a cool band to listen to? Who needs the Louvre when you’ve got the free and fascinating Musée Carnavalet? And who needs wine when you’ve got a luscious duck confit on your plate?

This area is becoming more popular each year due to its fantastic beaches and clear translusent waters. The small fishing village has grown a little over the last few years and now offers a good selection of holiday accommodation to suit most holiday makers needs. This is still a working fishing village with the local fishermen carrying on much the same as they have done over the years. However tourism has now become the main business and you will find a nice selection of shops, street cafes and restaurants dotted around the village and harbourside. Most come to Stintino to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches that are to be found in the area. La Pelosa is the most famous with its white sands and aquamarine sea, however there are others just as beautiful such as "saline", "Ezzi Manu" and "Puzzona" all close by with perfect white sand beaches. The evenings are relaxed with a selection of cafes to choose from before having dinner either in the hotel or one of the delightful restaurants in the area. The resort of Stintino has a  mainly Italian following so therefore the restaurants cater mainly for the Italian holiday maker. This means the standards are generally high in most establishments and little fast food is available. The town of Stintino has some lovely places to stay from small family hotels to quality 4 star properties. It is also possible to stay in a holiday apartment or private villa with pool.
