Banff National Park is an incredible destination YEAR ROUND. In the summer you should try a game of Frisbee Golf take an Alpine Helicopter or do some Horse Riding. In winter its mostly about skiing and snowboarding. Banff has its own town centre which is North West of Canmore itself East of Calgary. Calgary is cowboy country and the prairies are nothing like the mountains which are the Rockies. There are some golf courses in Kananaskis Country the other side of Canmore. This place is picture perfect and it can be nice to explore some of the lakes around here. The Bow River is also beautiful. The nightlife in Banff is legendary with Bars and Pubs galore and nightclubs for the skiing crowd in winter. OOps sorry snowboarders. Jasper National Park is also close by whateevr time of yer whatever you like there will be something for you here. I have been in summer only and can't wait to get there for the winter and hit some slopes. You can find great deals for skiing in Canada and here there are 3 places Banff, Kicking horse and Sunshine.

This is one of the favourite dive sites in Bonaire. The wonders of the undersea world have been looked after by the Bonaire Marine Park and hence why Bonaire Scuba Diving is among the best diving in the Caribbean. The wreck of the Hilma Hooker is perhaps one of the better dive sites. It has a max depth of around 30 m and is suitable for intermediate divers. There is a good narrated video of the Hilma Hooker here.

Baracoa with its fishing villages around accessible by walkways suspended a foot of the water made of bamboo its crumbling Baseball Stadium on the beach make this an intriguing place. There are treks galore and the main river Toa River provides many tours.

Baracoa was founded by the Spanish in 1512 by Diego Velazquez but I can imagine these villages were here first somehow. The region is beautiful and the town charming. There are some great Casas to be stayed in too.

A great guide to Baracoa can be found online here.

Havana Cuba may not be your first port of call when visiting Cuba but you should visit for sure even if you have a package deal to varadero. Make sure to find a great hotel or if you are backpacking in Cuba stay in a casa particular. They are well run safe and it is very normal for this to happen. The national hotel on the Malecon is worth a visit inside and also finish your evening on the Malecon with the rest of Havana.

Santiago De Cuba was where Fidel Castro led his peoples revolutionary army to attack the Moncada Barracks.
There are many beautiful buildings that help make Santiago a worthwhile stop when backpacking in Cuba and it may also be a gateway for getting to the beach side destination that is fast becoming Cuba's best Backpacker paradise namely Baracoa. But visit the Cathedral and Fort in Santiago de Cuba at least.

Rome - What to do guide in Rome

Are you kidding ! There is so much to see in Rome. Its not one of those cities that you will do in a day. So you will need a place to stay and why not check out hostels and apartments in Rome?Rome is a walkable city with the Vatican being somewhat further west. Broadly speaking the Architecture Art and things to see can be classified into historical categories as Ancient Rome, Medieval Rome and the Renaissance Period. Rome is a very Fashionable city you can't look too good in Italy and you will enjoy shopping here the Restaurants though you will feel it expensive in the more touristic areas and (a cappuccino can run you 4 euros) and perhaps a nice seat in the sunshine on one of the many Piaza's.

Rome Travel Tips 1

Buying a Roma Pass: Roma Pass can be purchased at Tourist Information Points in Rome including the train station, Fiumincino Airport, travel agencies, hotels, bus ticket offices, news stands, and tabacchi. Roma Pass can also be purchased directly from the museum or site ticket windows. Current price is 25 euro, good for three days from validation. Depending on what you do this could be a saver. With this card the first two Sights are free. Making the collesseum one of the first two things you use your card on is a great idea.

Highlights of Rome and the Vatican City

Vatican City

St Peters Basilica
Saint Peters Square
Circus of Nero
Sistine Chapel

Rome City

Palatine Hill and Colosseum - Built in between 70 and 82 as a venue for gladiator and animal fights. Perhaps these days a Roma Vs Lazio game is the contemporary version. On Sunday the Via dei Fori Imperiali for Colosseum is closed to traffic, making a nice place to walk. The Colosseum allows you to go up and do a complete circuit with guides or audio guides but the signposts also do a good job if you are on a budget. Guided tours are 8 euros extra the audio 4.5..The upper walkways allow you a view into the centre of the arena where you can imagine the fighting. Now you see into the rooms which would have been underground and only a single portion of seating remains. Still its an impressive thing to do there are lifts which make this a great thing to do for those with less ability.

The Roman Forum / Palatine -Roman ruins which were the formal places legal, ceremonial etc of ancient Rome. These are just across from the Colosseum and usually will be included in the same ticket price. We are told that the Rome Pass will allow you to do the Colosseum and the Forum / Palatine as one use (you get two free uses).

Dan Brown was making Rome even more on your radar with his Angels and Demons book many of his scenes take place in interesting visitable sights. Panthenon, Piazza Navona and its Fountain of the Rivers for example all in a walk-able distance to each other.

Trevi Fountain - they say if you toss a coin in you will return to Rome, I wonder what they do with all the coins.

Arch of Constantine
Catacombs
Piazza Venezia (designed by Michelangelo), Vittorio Emanuele Monument and Capotoline Hill are in one spot. There are good views of the Forum from Capotoline Hill.
Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo Via Del Corso - here shop and visit the Spanish steps.
The Pantheon - If you are here also look out for Piazza di Rotonda a nice space. I love Benini's elephant, its close by the Panthenon - a statue of an Elephant with an obelisk on its back the obelisks feature heavily in Romes sights.

Rome Travel Tips 2

Be careful of your pockets and belongings when in crowded places like the metro. As a tourist you will be targeted as easy, don't make it easy for them though experts can work in teams and distract you while they relieve you of your valuables.

Piazza Navona
The Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura
Piazza del Popolo
Villa Borghese gardens
Some Rome Nightlife can be found in Testaccio District with some nightclubs.

Carriacou Grenada - Sail there.

I wanted to write about the place that saved me from despair as I had voyaged to Grenada on a cheapish flight and was well quite disappointed. But Carriacou with budget accommodation options and a much more manageable logistical size for the transport available made my week. The scuba diving was excellent and you can while away some time exploring the beaches by kayak or have a run in the sun in some gorgeous scenery and underdevelopment. There is a yaught club too and here is the thing its a very sailor type place, many visit by the power of the wind in sail indeed there is a regatta. Grenada itself is not that bad really but for the backpacker there is nothing really to do on a budget though the tours to the centre of the isle are worthwhile. It was dead in the evening as well. Gary Rhodes has a restaurant on Grande Anse beach which is nice but there is better on Carriacou ! I think its possible to do Grenada reasonably with an all inclusive deal otherwise prepare to pay a lot for a hotel. Many come for the diving in particular the Bianca C the largest wreck in the Caribbean, strong currents and being mostly at over 30 m means its hard to dive on air and nitrox is a much better option or tek it out.

The official guide to Grenada can be found here.

West Bay Roatan

West Bay is pretty much that paradise beach you get on the tv. It is at the western tip of the bay island Roatan situated off the north coast of Honduras. There are many resorts that are not overly developed and represent a nice controlled development. I hope it keeps that way. You can access a selection of those Honduras Resorts here. It is a popular spot for Italians as it is served by a couple of all inclusive resorts Henry Morgans and TGI s. The diving is very good around Roatan and you will have no problems in selecting a dive shop Roatan Scuba Diving is a good resource on diving in Roatan.

The beach is a very gentle slope and the resorts spray the eggs of the sand flies/fleas so that this isn't a major annoyance. Though not great for the reef perhaps. You can buy anything you will need there and not at a massively hiked up price. There are some volley ball nets towards the end and during Semana Santa the place is what we call heaving !

Many visitors to Roatan arrive by cruiseship and come straight to west bay. Many of west bay visitors will stay in other places like west end or further away still.

Its a beach that should be seen in a lifetime perhaps ? If you dont like it Roatan offers much more besides.

Milton Keynes - Some things to be enjoyed

What is the closest airport to Milton Keynes? Answer: London Luton Airport -

Milton Keynes was designed in 1969 and engulfed some villages 50 miles outside of London. It is a very unique city for the uk. It has been designed with the American style grid of roads appropriatey named h for horizontal and v for vertical therefore you could work out where you need to be if say your company was situated on h3 v7. All the intersections are not lights but roundabouts and dual carriageways are the norm here. So its great to get around in and you can park. So while it enjoys a lot of criticsm for having a lack of character the locals love the convenience and it is within commutable distance of London.
To give the place some character metal cows painted the classic white and black can be seen at random moments. Also there is a Buddhist temple of a large size you can wander through of Japanese design. Appreciate the Zen of the gravel and stone garden yourself. There is a prayer tree which only adds to the mysticism but is touching to read some of the notes on the tree. If you want a quiet walk around the less busy Willen lake. There are two one much more developed close to Gullivers world a theme park where you can sail and do lakey type stuff.

Milton Keynes village is worth a visit as you leave the new style construction all of a sudden you arrive in older English village.

The shopping centre is one of the largest in Europe and you can get there fast and park for free or park very close and pay a meter.

If you like you might try the snow dome a real snow ski slope to get your legs in shape for winter. Yes Milton Keynes has this cool type stuff. The theatre district is the other side of the shopping centre and worth a visit in the evening.

If you go to Milton Keynes do some research and decide on what to do as its not the sort of place that inspiration will just come to you. I hope that if you know of some good things to do in Milton Keynes then write a quick idea below for our readers. You will enjoy the ease of it and perhaps wish you lived there...

One of the three most beautiful bays in the world: Les Saintes - French West Indies

Les Saintes (or Îles des Saints) are a group of islands, within the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. The bay is considered one of the 3 most beautiful bays in the world. Their total land area is almost 13 km2, their population less than 3000 inhabitants and they are located about 15 km SW of Guadeloupe. They are in total 9 islands but 7 are uninhabited. The main ones are Terre-de-Haut with the larger population and the Terre-de-Bas mainly agricultural.

Terre-de-Haut is a beautiful place to visit if you have the chance of being in Guadeloupe. The Fort Napoleon and the views from its garden and totally worth it.

It is a very nice island to explore by walking or renting a scooter (about USD 25-30 per day). There are also mini-vans. Prices are reasonable. There are some small gift shops and of course nice small places to eat with excellent food, mainly based on fish since the people of the islands are well known for their skills as fishermen. And there is also a couple of good dive sites such as Le Paté-Sec, so do not miss that chance.

The trip from Guadeloupe is with a ferry or plane but it is very short since it is only at a distance of 15 km.

It is also a good option to spend a couple of days, having affordable accomodations per week or per day like for example, Auberge Les Petits Saints, a very nice hotel with bungalows, suites and rooms.

So, even if it is for a day or to spend a week, do not miss this beautiful place in the French Caribbean.

10 good reasons to visit Ushuaia

For those who are travellers by nature, it is not necessary to have reasons to go to a new place. Just the fact of being new it is enough. However, sometimes facts or tips like the ones that follow might help to make a decision when several options are in front of us:

1 - Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the World

Approximately 1490 miles from the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, 5608 from Miami, 6603 from New York, located in the Argentinian province of Tierra del Fuego (meaning "Land of Fire") this city is one of the most visited places by foreign tourists in South America. If you want to have that documented, go to the "Museum of the End of the World" located in the city, and you passport can be stamped with a "End of the World" seal. No way you can be closer to Antarctica except if you are on a boat ...

2 - More than 16 hours of daylight in the summer (South Hemisphere summer Dec.21st to March 20th)

Since sunrise is about 4.30am, sunset after 10.30 pm and complete darkness arrives after midnight giving the chance of enjoying lots of outdoor activities. One of the favourite ones in the summer is trekking inside Tierra del Fuego National Park, a 63,000 hectares of sub-Antarctic forest with a very rich ecosystem, where it is also possible and highly enjoyable to horseback riding and mountain biking. Sport fishing season is also in summer, taking the end of spring and beginning of autumn too since covers from October to April. The fishing techniques allowed here are fly fishing and spinning rod. Tierra del Fuego salmons are famous for their quality. Brown and rainbow trouts are found in abundance in lakes and rivers.

3 -Despite its latitude (54° 49' S) only rarely you will experience extreme temperatures

The average temperature is 43° F to 50° F during the night (6°C to 10°C) and 46.4°F to 64.4°F during the day (8°C to 18°C) from December to February (South Hemisphere summer). During the South Hemisphere winter, from June to August, night average temperature moves between 17.8°F and 5°F ( -8°C to-15°C) and day average temperature between 28.4°F and 37.4°F (-2S°C to 3°C). South Hemisphere Spring and Autumn (September to November and March to May) average temperature are similar, being night average temperature 33.8 °F to 44.6°F (1°C to 7°C) and day average 41°F to 50°F (5°C to 10°C). However you can expect south-western winds, with an average speed of 20km/h so it is always good to take some winter clothes such as a windbreaker.

4 - Many choices for winter sports fans and even for those who just want to spend some time in the snow getting to know the area not just walking...

For downhill skiing, Monte Castor is the place. Located at 9 miles from the centre of the city, this ski centre has 17 km. (10.5 miles) of slopes, exceptional snow, lifting means able to transport 5000 people an hour and ski, snowboard and snowblade school. The runs with difficulty from green to black and the Ski area opens from middle June until middle October. At Monte Castor you can also ride snow-cats or husky sleighs. Another place to enjoy the winter sports is the Glacier Martial where there is a single ski slope open in winter months. It is also possible to hike up the glacier to have an amazing view of the city and the Beagle Chanel. Cross country skiing is a good choice also in the beautiful valleys close to the city like Tierra Mayor Valley that can be explored as well by walking with snowshoes, dog sledges or snowmobiles.

5- This city is base for cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula

... with stops in West Point Island, Carcass Island, Stanley, South Georgia and Drake Passage, also cruises to the channels and fiords in the South of Patagonia, ending in Valparaiso and other ports in Chile and cruises to South Africa.

6 - Get to know the Estancias

Not far from the city you can find one of the traditional Estancias that open their doors to allow visitors to learn about the lifestyle. Visitors can just go for the day or stay there. The best known ones are Estancia Harberton whose owners continue raising sheep in their 20,000 hectares and which main building was brought from England in 1887 and mounted on the bank of the channel and Estancia Maria Behety from the beginning of the 20th century with a barn that allows shearing 7000 sheep a day.

7 - Great food

Quality and variety. Special recommendations: * Patagonian Lamb. Tierra del Fuego is a land of sheep and lamb specially prepared as "asado" (Argentinian barbecue) at crossed poles vertically next to the grill. The most tender meat you have ever tasted. ** Fish: Grilled black hake, trout and salmon. *** You will find restaurants of a wide range of prices but do not leave the city without going to at least of these ones: Tante Nina (sea-food, on the port), Kaupé (a little more expensive, but great view and the best food...), Gustino (local cuisine and best wine bar, in front of the port).

8 - Tourism is welcome and activities are extremely well organized although you can choose to do it by yourself

Ushuaia is a city with tourism all year around and receives tourists from all over the world. You will find a wide range of hotels, hostels, B&B, resorts, etc. but it is highly recommended to make a reservation if going during special holidays such as New Year's Eve or Easter. During the rest of the year, even when it is better to be sure that you will have a room somewhere, usually it is possible to get a room at a hostel. To get there by plane, Aerolineas Argentinas from Buenos Aires or LAN from Santiago de Chile. By bus, you can go from different cities in Argentina. Once in Ushuaia, some of the local buses take you to some of the usual attractions. Other places are served by minivans. Taxis are not expensive. There are also car/bicycle hire companies. You can also hire tours directly with your hotel/hostel or any travel agency. Prices are the same so choose the option that suits you better for the tour you want to buy. Sometimes it is better to hire a taxi and arrange with the driver a fixed price to visit a couple of attractions.

9 - Lot to see in the city and around

Even if you do not have the time to go out of the city, you will find lot to do. Starting with the amazing view of the Beagle Channel, that 112 miles route that links Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and has "buried" lots of ships. The channel can be explore with one of the many tours along the bay up to Des Eclaireurs Lighthouse and the island of the seals that also allows to do some bird watching. If not a fan of boats, a visit to the Museum of the End of the World (remember to stamp your passport...) can be interesting or to the Maritime Museum and Prison Museum, inside the old prison facilities. The original architecture of some cells was maintained but the most interesting part is maybe the documentation about expeditions, maps and scale models of vessels. And very close, located west of town just before the entrance to the National Park, you can take the Tren del Fin del Mundo: a very pleasant train ride into the park on a narrow railway rebuilt on part of the roadbed of the old logging train. The ride last 45 minutes.

10 - Many natural attractions close to the city

From Ushuaia is possible to start many tours to explore natural beauties within a few hours. The fantastic lakes Escondido and Fagnano are a good example of this. In a complete tour of 7 hours you will start crossing valleys, forests and rivers then the route begins to climb the mountain forests up to the highest point of the journey, the viewpoint overlooking Lago Escondido and shocking to the bottom, the immensity of the Fagnano. The penguin rookery is also quite close and can be visited within 4 hours. A complete walk for the Tierra del Fuego National Park takes 4 hours too.

Well, I hope these 10 reasons are good enough to place Ushuaia as a possible future destination in your travel plans. If so, plan to stay there at least 4 days since you will find that there is always something else that you want to do... and it is quite far to just spend a weekend. You might also consider that it is quite close to Glacier Perito Moreno (and that it is also totally worth it) and there are short flights between Ushuaia and Calafate (the closest city to Perito Moreno), so a good combo would be Ushuaia + Calafate (7-10 days)

The historical city of Malaga in the Andalusian region of Spain has over the years grown to be a major destination for tourists.  Blessed with a warm climate and beautiful beaches you can enjoy a relaxing family holiday in one of the many hotels along the shoreline.  With sweeping views over the Mediterranean Ocean you can enjoy the fresh ocean air whilst eating fresh seafood.

Malaga in fact offers tourists much more besides nice weather and beaches.  In recent surveys, Malaga’s history was the number one reason for tourists visiting Malaga followed by the cultural and culinary experience offered to tourists.  The large number of restaurants and hotels in Malaga reflects this.  However In order to get a range of great experiences from your holiday in Malaga, you may wish to try some of the excursions which are on offer. The trips will enable you to travel further afield and explore the different sights and areas outside of your holiday resort. Alongside the excitement of these visits, the unique excursions will provide you and your fellow holidaymakers with lasting memories of your holiday in Malaga.

Marbella, Puerto Banus, Mijas

A popular tour is to Marbella which gives you the opportunity to visit an area considered to be the jewel of the Costa del Sol. Whilst the rich and expensive areas of the resort may be well known to tourists, the old town of Marbella is an unexpected treat as it is packed with traditional Spanish boutiques and restaurants.  This traditional atmosphere is continued through the area’s cobbled alleyways and whitewashed houses. 4 miles from this you can also enjoy the more affluent area which draws in many tourists due to its marina contained millionaire’s yachts and casinos. On this excursion you will also likely visit Puerto Banus; here you can enjoy the seafood restaurants on the front.  If you then travel across the sea to the village of Mijas you can take pleasure in the great views across Marbella due to the community being several hundred feet above sea level.  You can then stroll through the tightly-packed village and observe the Bullfighting ring or enjoy a cold drink in one of the traditional tavernas.

Ardales Village, El Chorro Gorge, Antequera

This tour enables you to visit many of the unspoilt areas around Andalusia. This includes such places as the villages of Ardales where you can enjoy sitting outsides cafes and taking in the scenery with the locals. You can then also visit El Chorro where you may wish to gaze into the deep and void gorge. If you are somewhat of a daredevil, you may also want to walk through the several underground railway tunnels in order to get some more spectacular views.  After this, the market town of Antequera offers some light relief as you can shop as well as sightsee around the churches and architectural wonders of the bullfighting ring, the Plaza de Toros.

Alhambra Palace, Granada

Despite the lack of variety within this excursion, it is an extremely popular trip with tourists due to the memorable and breathtaking architecture of the Palace. The Palace’s interior is one of the most exquisite examples of Moorish art left at this date; it was built during the Moorish Kingdom within Spain and highlights the high arts and cultures of the time. Alongside a tour of the Palace, which offers you insight into its history, you can also explore the gardens which have been professionally designed and filled with foliage and exotic flowers.

Though the historical city has a great number of sightseeing hotspots and plenty of beaches for relaxation, there are many reasons why excursions from Malaga should be considered.  The different areas and cities surrounding Malaga each present a new experience.  You can choose a destination suitable for your preferences and travel to quieter traditional areas if you desire or to some of the most popular destinations in Spain.

These excursions above are just a handful of things you can do and see whilst visiting Malaga, to get the most out of your holiday many people choose car hire in Malaga to travel around since buses and private tours are not always convenient.  With car hire you will be able to truly get the most out of your holiday in Malaga.

Welcome to the new and very impressive Suvabhumi International Airport Bangkok you will probably arrive here on your visit to Thailand.

Tip: Watch out for older looking cabs (Try to avoid them!) that are set up from the airport public taxi desk. Though its official and recommended to use in all the guide books you will pay an extra 50 Baht. Simply go to departures upstairs and wait for people to arrive via cab at the airport, you can asses the cars and look for new Pink cabs these meters tend to be accurate and not overly sped up ! Your trip should cost from 250 to 350 Baht plus 70 Baht in tolls which you will have to pay yourself.

Koh Tao is the small island in the Gulf of Thailand that was discovered to have clear warm waters with great coral reef. It can be hard to know what to choose in a dive shop, I like the smaller places that also have high standards. What can you expect from your stay in Ko Tao ?

Annoyingly mopeds and bikes use the main path above the beach and first line of developments so its not possible to wander relaxed style when its busy, getting around by public transport is not as cheap as it could be so like ko phangan people tend to rent their own mopeds and hence the gridlock.

But on to some good stuff - the diving is very good great to learn in and you will also enjoy a few dives if you are experienced.
