Flag of Greece ðŸ‡¬ðŸ‡·

Places to stay in Greece: For a holiday people usually go for Zakynthos, Rhodes, Crete and Corfu, though the island of Santorini is a gem and popular as a destination for couples. Things to do in Greece:

Try some of the local food (Gemistas, Saganaki, Soutzoukakia or Spanokopita) or great seafood dishes like octopus or the classic Tzatziki yogurt dip and a lamb kebab. Go island hopping getting tipsy on Ouzo if that floats your boat. Get a mental break away from it all in a quiet rural village pension in Crete. Check a nice restaurant and enjoy some fine Greek wines.

Visit the Parthenon in Athens. Trek Vikos Gorge, imagine Rhodes as it was in old town with the Knights Quater and Turkish relics. Sunset in the northern village of Oia Santorini. Meteora monasteries are a good example of the many. Appreciate the welcome of the Greeks and observe their customs religion and clothing.

Greece in South East Europe is largely made up of islands in different seas. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of mainland Greece, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Situated at southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The country has borders with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. Approximately 1400 islands make up Greece and 227 of which are inhabited), including Crete, the Dodecanese, the Cyclades, and the Ionian Islands among others. Eighty percent of Greece consists of mountains, of which Mount Olympus is the highest at 2,917 m (9,570.21 ft).

Modern Greece traces its roots to the civilization of ancient Greece, generally considered to be the cradle of Western civilization. As such, it is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles. Greece is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Athens

If there is one single place, which is the focus of all Greek travels, then it is Athens. A visit to Greece is incomplete without a visit to Athens. There are so many places of interest to visit in Athens, that it is suggested you at least have one-week time reserved for exploring the attractions of Athens. Athens is the capital of the Greek state and is in of the world’s oldest cities, whose recorded history spans over a period of 3,400 years. Thus, it is evident that there is no death of tourist destinations in Athens. A few of them are mentioned here.

The Acropolis of Athens refers to the fortified citadel surrounding Athens. The Acropolis was the religious and cultural symbol of ancient Athens, and it still maintains its ancient charm in its limestone walls. The ancient grandeur of acropolis can be still felt if the backpacking traveler intends to listen to the stories of time in the ancient acropolis in his or her heart. Athens also houses the Acropolis museum, that was built in 1949-53 at the southeast corner of the Acropolis. The museum bears the testimonies of the ancient glory of Greece.

Besides the Acropolis museum, there are also other museums in Athens like the Benaki museum and the national archaeological museum. The Benaki museum is based on the private collection of Antinios Benaki, who lived in Cairo Egypt and had built up a huge collection of ancient Grecian, Turkish, Chinese and Egyptian treasures. Exhibits from early Christian Egypt, especially te Coptic robes deserve special mention.

The Agora, or the large open area market places in the north of Acropolis are also tourist destinations.

Other prominent tourist destinations of Athens are the temple of Poseidon, the Dafni monastery and the theater of Dionysos.
If you want to stay in Athens for onward travel and are backpacking then the Athens Backpackers is possibly for you.

Just a not on the booking- we made it independent with flights from Jet2 and a room here from booking.com. We didn't get the same value doing the whole package with Jet2.

The volcanic island of Santorini is a major travel destination around Greece. Santorini is also known as Thira in the native dialect. Fira is the major town of the island of Santorini. The typical Mediterranean blue of Greece is also reflected in the islands, coffee shops and in the beaches of Santorini. However, it must be mentioned here that Santorini is not a Mediterranean sea island, but an Aegean sea island. The island is located about 200 km (120 miles) south east from the Grecian mainland. The island is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands and is constituted of the municipalty of Thera and the community of Oia. The lonely traveler can still find the pristine beauty of nature in the uninhabited islands of Christiana, Asporinisi, Palaia kameni and the Nea Kameni. Like Crete, the Santorini island was also an important center of the Minoan civilization.

The island of Santorini is centered around a giant central lagoon that is essentially the remnant of an earlier volcanic explosion. The lagoon measures 12 by 7 km ( 7.5 by 4.3 miles) in length and width and is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides of the lagoon. The lagoon merges into the sea in two places, the northwest and the southwest. The confluence of the lagoon into the Aegean sea is intercepted by a smaller island, the Therasia. The sunset view from the Santorini lagoon is a major tourist attraction. Santorini in Greece has also gathered considerable reputation as a wedding destination with the backdrop of the Santorini sunset illuminating the weddings in a heavenly light.

The Megaro gyzi museum and the archaeological museum of Fira are major tourist attractions. While the Megaro gyzi museum is an archive of modern Santorini, the archaeological museum of Fira holds the ancient frescoes of the Minoan civilization. The ‘saffron gatherers’ is a reputed Minoan frescoe in the archaeological museum.

The accommodation and transportation facilities from and about Thira are convenient for travelers. The Thira municipality arranges bus tours for travelers.
