The Acropolis of Athens refers to the fortified citadel surrounding Athens. Athens also houses the Acropolis museum, that was built in 1949-53 at the southeast corner of the Acropolis. The museum bears the testimonies of the ancient glory of Greece.
Besides the Acropolis museum, there are also other museums in Athens like the Benaki museum and the national archaeological museum. The Benaki museum is based on the private collection of Antinios Benaki,who lived in Cairo Egypt and had built up a huge collection of ancient Grecian, Turkish, Chinese and Egyptian treasures. Exhibits from early Christian Egypt,especially te Coptic robes deserve special mention.
The Agora, or the large open area market places in the north of Acropolis are also tourist destinations.
Other prominent tourist destinations of Athens are the temple of Poseidon, the Dafni monastery and the theater of Dionysos.
